The Confluence of Stainless Steel Tube Fittings Precision Orifices

Bird Precision offers the design engineer standard stainless compression tube fittings which include Precision Orifices and/or filters for the control of liquid and gas all in one fitting. 316 Stainless Unions, Male Connectors, Port Connectors, Tees, Elbows, Face Seal and various Gland diameters are being offered.

Extreme corrosion and wear resistant Sapphire and Ruby orifices in sizes from 0.0004" thru 0.081". Our unique micron size chart for those very low flow requirements. These orifices typically offer repeatable, dependable flow even in harsh environments. 316 stainless wire mesh filters can be included in average micron ratings of 5, 25, 43, 75 and 140.

As technology demands precision and smaller tolerances, engineers are turning to Bird Precision micro-drilled inserts. As plastic barb orifice fittings get smaller, users rapidly begin to sacrifice strength and rigidity. Smaller plastic barbs have thinner walls which often snap off with very little effort. This can be frustrating for production assembly line personnel, and costly in both time and dollar value. Many companies are, therefore, switching from plastic assemblies to metal assemblies.

Bird Precision has now introduced metal 1/16" barb fittings retrofit with precision ruby orifices offering the strength and precision design engineers need. These new miniature fittings are available as in-line barb to barb and 10-32 to barb as well as in tube inserts.

Many hydraulic engineers require balance flow in their systems. Therefore, in spool valves and servo valves where a shuttle oscillates back and forth between ports that contain an orifice, or in applications where two cylinders are required to lift in tandem with the same stroke, orifices with balance flow are critical.

Before the advent of precision sapphire and ruby orifices, hydraulic engineers were forced to calibrate orifices and segregate them into matched sets in order to achieve the balanced flow they needed.

Conventional methods of producing sharp edged orifices such as drilling and EDM are inherently flawed and do not produce orifices with a predictable coefficient of discharge. This is because of drill wobble, burrs, irregularities in the edge, out-of-roundness and imprecise tolerance of the hole.

Needle valves allow the adjustment of flow until a desired level is reached, at which point the flow to the system is supposedly fixed. The problem comes when someone later decides they want to make their own adjustments, thereby disturbing the original calibrated flow. As a result, many engineers are replacing expensive needle valves with less expensive fixed orifices that cannot be tampered with. Bird Precision stocks a wide range of flow sizes that are extremely repeatable for flow even in high quantities.

To produce True Sharp Edge Orifices, all the variables that might influence the Cd Value (Coefficient of Discharge) must be controlled during production. This includes the orifice hole length, edges, surface finishes, roundness and the elimination of all tool marks, burrs, ragged edges and irregularities. If any one of these areas is not perfectly managed, the orifice flow rates will vary from piece to piece, thereby making it impossible to predict flow with any accuracy.
